Airbnb is investing $5 million to support candidates who favor short-term rentals in New York City and state elections

New York City: Airbnb is making a big move by launching a Super PAC with a hefty $5 million to back candidates who support short-term rentals. This new political group, called “Keeping New York Affordable,” is gearing up to help candidates in over a dozen City Council primaries this June.
They’re looking to back those who will let homeowners rent out their places on Airbnb, especially after facing tough competition from the hotel industry. The Hotel Trades Council union isn’t too happy about this, as they see short-term rentals as a threat to their business.
Airbnb took a hit last year when the City Council passed strict rules on home-sharing, which forced them to take down thousands of listings. This led to a spike in hotel prices, making it a tough time for the company.
Now, they’re trying to bounce back by getting involved in politics. They’re pushing for a new bill from Councilmember Farah Louis, which aims to restore short-term rental rights for small homeowners. This bill has some big names backing it, including Speaker Adrienne Adams.
However, the Hotel Trades Council is fighting back with an ad campaign against this bill, ready to take on Airbnb again. They believe that despite Airbnb’s money, it’s the voters who really matter, and they’re concerned about how short-term rentals affect affordable housing and public safety.
