The St. Croix Watershed Research Station invites artists and writers for a summer residency focused on environmental themes, with applications due March 2.

Marine: The St. Croix Watershed Research Station is on the lookout for artists and writers for their summer residency program called Artist at Pine Needles.
Since it started in 2002, over 75 creatives have enjoyed this unique opportunity. The goal? To connect the arts with science and share that with the community. The Pine Needles cabin, where the residency takes place, was once owned by historian James Taylor Dunn, who envisioned it as a retreat for scholars and artists.
For 2025, they’re accepting applications from those who focus on environmental or natural history topics. There’s even a category for emerging artists, but you need to be at least 21 to apply.
If selected, the four artists will need to create and lead a community outreach project, like a workshop or lecture. Plus, they’ll donate an original piece inspired by their time there to the research station within a year.
Artists will receive a stipend of $650 per week during their stay, and there’s up to $400 available for travel support if needed.
You can grab the application packets from the research station, which is part of the Science Museum of Minnesota, or check out their website at smm.org/scwrs/programs/artist/. Just remember, the deadline is March 2, and they’ll announce the decisions by April 4.
