Colorado: The CU Buffs women’s basketball team is adjusting to life in the Big 12. For many players, it feels like they’re still in nonconference play.

They’ve switched from the Pac-12 to the Big 12 this season, facing teams they haven’t seen in years. But for two players, it’s a different story.

Nyamer Diew and Lior Garzon bring valuable experience from their time at Iowa State and Oklahoma State, respectively. Diew mentioned how familiar it feels to face these teams again.

Garzon echoed that sentiment, saying it’s easier to prepare when you know what to expect from opponents. They’re both excited to help their teammates navigate this new conference.

This Wednesday, the Buffs will visit No. 20 West Virginia for the first time ever. Diew has played there before, while Garzon is also familiar with the Mountaineers.

Even though the scouting reports may change, Diew believes many systems remain the same. Their past experiences are proving to be a big help for the team.

Coach JR Payne didn’t specifically recruit Diew and Garzon for the Big 12 transition, but their insights have been invaluable. They often contribute to game preparations, sharing what they know about opponents.

Garzon noted that every game in the Big 12 feels like a tough battle. She loves the challenge, as any team can win on any given day.

So far, the Buffs have been strong at home, winning all three Big 12 games, but they’ve struggled on the road. Diew and Garzon stress the importance of staying united when playing away.

Garzon pointed out that the energy from home fans is missing on the road, making it crucial for the team to stick together. They’ve learned a lot from their first road trips.

As the season progresses, both players feel the team is becoming more cohesive. Coach Payne agrees, noting that new players are starting to grasp the team’s terminology and strategies.

Looking ahead, the Buffs are gearing up for their matchup against West Virginia, hoping to build on their recent successes and learn from their earlier road experiences.
