Concerns rise as local businesses struggle due to ongoing roadworks in Rawtenstall

The roadworks are part of a bigger plan to improve the town, but they’re being done in phases. The first phase started in October and is focused on the northern end of St Mary’s Way. Now, they’re moving to the junction near Asda, with changes like new traffic lights and improved pedestrian crossings.
Gould expressed his frustration at a recent council meeting, saying they want to work with the councils, not against them. He pointed out that many businesses are struggling, with one even closing due to a drop in customers. He’s calling for better traffic management and quicker responses to issues as they arise.
In response, Coun Alyson Barnes from Rossendale Council acknowledged the disruption but suggested regular meetings with the chamber to address concerns. She mentioned that many businesses might be eligible for rate relief, which could help ease some financial burdens.
Gould pushed for more immediate action, saying the county council has been slow to respond to their needs. Coun Barnes agreed that the relationship between the councils and local businesses needs to improve. Meanwhile, Lancashire County Council believes these improvements will benefit Rawtenstall in the long run, advising residents to plan for delays during the construction.
