Eviction filings in Cincinnati have surged, reaching levels not seen since before the pandemic, raising concerns for many residents.

So, what’s an eviction filing? It’s a legal step a landlord takes to kick a tenant out, usually for not paying rent. While not everyone who gets a filing ends up homeless, many folks in Cincinnati are feeling the pinch. Rents are climbing, but wages aren’t keeping up, according to Nick DiNardo from the Legal Aid Society.
He pointed out that while wages are going up, rents are skyrocketing even faster. Since 2020, rents have jumped due to inflation and people staying renters longer because buying a home is tough right now. Plus, the rental assistance that was available during COVID is mostly gone now. DiNardo mentioned that there was a lot of help back then, but now it’s pretty limited.
In 2022, a law signed by Gov. Mike DeWine stopped cities in Ohio from putting rent control measures in place.
Researchers at Eviction Lab found the buildings with the most eviction filings in Cincinnati. They discovered that just a handful of landlords were behind 25% of all filings. The worst offender was in Mount Airy, with 265 filings. Westwood had the second highest, with 133 filings.
