Democrats criticized GOP lawmakers for failing to advance the SALT deduction during a recent meeting with Trump at Mar-a-Lago

Rep. Laura Gillen from Long Island made it clear that the double taxation is hitting hard on residents. She urged House Republicans to push for a full restoration of the SALT deduction, even saying she’d take their place if they won’t.
Meanwhile, some New York Republicans, like Rep. Nicole Malliotakis and Rep. Nick LaLota, were all smiles after their meeting with Trump, hoping to get his backing on the issue. But Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries wasn’t impressed, calling the meeting just a bunch of talk without any real outcomes.
The GOP is trying to spin the meeting positively, claiming they’re making strides to get Trump’s support for the SALT deduction, which is crucial for wealthy voters in states like New York, New Jersey, and California.
LaLota tweeted that Trump is committed to helping Long Islanders, while Lawler echoed that they’ll get it done. However, Malliotakis admitted it’s unlikely they’ll completely remove the cap, as Trump wants them to work out a fair number with other Republicans.
With the GOP holding a slim majority in the House, the future of the SALT deduction and Trump’s broader agenda looks uncertain. Some Republicans are against lifting the cap due to budget concerns, while others are hesitant to support Trump’s spending plans. The situation is tricky, especially with the majority expected to shrink further soon.
