CAIRO: So, it looks like Hamas has given the green light to a ceasefire draft. This could mean a break in the fighting in Gaza and the release of some hostages. Two officials involved in the talks shared this news, and it seems like the U.S. and Qatar are helping to mediate things.

According to reports, the proposed agreement is legit, and both Hamas and an Egyptian official confirmed it. An Israeli official mentioned that they’re making progress, but they’re still working out the details. Everyone involved is keeping their identities under wraps for now.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is feeling optimistic, saying they’re on the brink of a ceasefire. He believes it could happen soon, maybe even within hours or days.

The U.S., Egypt, and Qatar have been trying to end this conflict for about a year now. They’re also working to secure the release of hostages taken during Hamas’ attack on October 7, 2023. There are still nearly 100 people held captive, and sadly, many are believed to be dead.

If this deal goes through, it could finally pause the fighting and bring some hope to the people in Gaza. The situation there is dire, with much of the area in ruins and around 90% of the population displaced.

But don’t get too excited just yet. Even if they reach an agreement, it won’t kick in right away. Prime Minister Netanyahu’s Security Cabinet will need to approve it first, and they’re likely to back whatever he suggests.

In the past, there’s been optimism that fizzled out, but now it seems they’re eager to finalize things before the new U.S. president takes office on January 20. Hamas has said they’re in the final stages of negotiations.

During the October 7 attack, Hamas killed around 1,200 people and took about 250 hostages. Some hostages were released during a brief ceasefire last month, but many families are still waiting for news about their loved ones.

On the flip side, Israel’s military response has resulted in over 46,000 Palestinian deaths, with many being women and children. The situation is heartbreaking, and local health officials reported more casualties just recently.

As for the ceasefire plan, it’s a three-phase deal. The first phase involves releasing 33 hostages over six weeks in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. It’s a complicated situation, and negotiations are still ongoing.

In the second phase, Hamas would release the remaining captives, but they want a complete end to the war and a full Israeli withdrawal first. Netanyahu has been firm about continuing the fight until Hamas is no longer a threat.

In the third phase, the bodies of any remaining hostages would be returned, and there’s talk of a reconstruction plan for Gaza under international supervision.

With Trump’s inauguration approaching, there’s a lot of pressure on both sides to reach a deal. Thousands of Israelis are rallying for a resolution, while some hardliners are against any agreement with Hamas.

In Gaza, people are holding onto hope for a ceasefire. A child born on the first day of the war is just one example of the innocent lives affected. Everyone is just waiting for some peace and stability.

This story has been updated to clarify that around 100 people are still being held captive in Gaza, including foreign nationals.
