Governor Hochul’s plan aims to regulate heavy e-bikes for safer streets in New York.

The focus is on those Class 3 e-bikes that can zoom up to 25 mph and weigh over 100 pounds. If this proposal goes through, these bikes would need license plates and drivers would have to wear helmets. Right now, they can ride in bike lanes, but that could change.
Hochul’s plan also gives city officials the power to lower speed limits in bike lanes. But don’t worry, lighter Class 3 bikes under 100 pounds would still be allowed in bike lanes without needing a license.
Last year, 24 cyclists lost their lives in NYC, with 17 of those being e-bike riders. That’s a scary number, especially compared to just seven deaths on regular bikes. This has led to a push for more awareness about e-bike safety.
Interestingly, some city council members are also looking to make all e-bikes, no matter their weight or speed, require registration and licensing. It’s a hot topic that’s definitely getting attention.
