Join the free celebration in Hornell on Jan. 20 to honor MLK Jr.’s legacy with food, music, and community discussions

This celebration will focus on food security and dignity, honoring the legacy of the civil rights leader. It kicks off at 5 p.m. with live music and a festive meal featuring potato soup, okra, tomatoes, and rice. And of course, there’ll be cake and ice cream for dessert!
The event will also include a community conversation about “Food Security & Dignity.” Local groups like Living Acres Organic Farm and the “Y” Community Garden will be involved, along with cooking classes and the Alfred University Wellness Center.
Organized by the Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration Committee, everyone in the community is welcome to join in. It’s a great way to come together and reflect on King’s impact.
Just a little history: King’s birthday became a federal holiday in 1983. He was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, but we celebrate him on the third Monday of January each year.
By the way, public schools and many government offices in New York will be closed for the holiday. King, who fought for change through peaceful means, was tragically assassinated at just 39 years old in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968.
