Houston: A manhunt wrapped up on Wednesday when police shot and killed a suspect in the death of a sheriff’s deputy. The deputy was trying to serve a warrant when he was shot.

The suspect, 56-year-old Robert Lee Davis, was wanted for the fatal shooting of Deputy Jesus Jesse Vargas. Police confirmed that Davis was shot behind some businesses near where the incident happened.

Earlier in the day, Houston Mayor John Whitmire and Police Chief J. Noe Diaz shared the tragic news about Deputy Vargas. He was shot in the head while serving a warrant on a repeat offender.

Vargas was part of the U.S. Marshal’s Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force when the shooting occurred in a Dollar General parking lot around 11:30 a.m.

As Vargas and his partner approached the suspect’s vehicle, the man opened fire and took off. Sadly, Vargas was later pronounced dead at Ben Taub Hospital.

He was a dedicated officer with 17 years of service and leaves behind a wife and three kids. The community is mourning the loss of a true hero.

Before police found Davis, they shared his photo, noting he was last seen in a blue Nike hoodie and jeans. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives helped in the search.
