Dallas: The Cowboys are really into the idea of hiring a former player as their head coach. ESPN shared that they’re looking at Jason Witten, an 11-time Pro Bowl tight end, as a possible replacement for Mike McCarthy.

Adam Schefter mentioned on “Monday Night Countdown” that the Cowboys are just starting their search for a new head coach. He said there are a lot of names being tossed around, including Witten and Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. It’s still early, so we’ll see where Jerry Jones decides to go with this.

Witten, who spent 16 of his 17 NFL seasons with the Cowboys, had a brief stint in broadcasting after retiring in 2017. He returned to play in 2019 but wrapped up his career with the Raiders in 2020. He holds the record for the most receptions and receiving yards in Cowboys history.

Recently, Witten and Jerry Jones were spotted together at a boxing match, which has sparked more speculation about his potential return. The Cowboys are also considering other former stars, like Deion Sanders, who played for them in the late ’90s.

After parting ways with McCarthy, the Cowboys are looking to turn things around following a tough season where they finished 7-10, largely due to injuries, including losing star quarterback Dak Prescott. They hold the No. 12 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, so there’s a lot to look forward to.
