JBLM: A doctor at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Maj. Michael Stockin, was sentenced to over 13 years in prison. He pleaded guilty to 36 counts of sexual abuse involving male patients.

Stockin, who worked as an anesthesiologist and pain-management specialist, faced accusations from 41 military patients. These incidents happened between 2019 and 2022, where he inappropriately asked patients to undress and made unwanted physical contact.

He had been at Madigan Army Medical Center since July 2019. During the sentencing, military Judge Col. Larry Babin handed down a sentence of four months for each count, totaling more than 13 years. This was the maximum he could receive under a plea deal.

Initially, Stockin could have faced a much longer sentence, but he agreed to the plea deal in September. He appeared in court wearing his Army uniform and showed little emotion during the proceedings.

His attorney stated that Stockin took responsibility for his actions and hoped for healing for both the victims and himself. As a result of his conviction, Stockin will lose his medical license and be dismissed from the Army.

During the trial, 22 victims shared their experiences, highlighting the trauma they suffered. Prosecutors praised their courage, noting the long road to justice they faced.

Stockin was first charged in August 2023, and the number of counts grew as the investigation continued. The Army Criminal Investigation Division dedicated significant resources to this case.

Even though the court-martial is over, questions remain about the Army’s knowledge of Stockin’s actions. His previous assignments included medical centers in Honolulu and Maryland, and he had served in Iraq.

Attorneys for the victims believe there are more victims yet to be identified. They are pursuing further accountability for the Army, claiming it failed to protect its personnel.

Stockin will serve his sentence at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and will be required to register as a sex offender upon his release.
