The Knicks are actively assessing Jericho Sims’ trade value as the deadline approaches
Sims, who has been with the Knicks for a while, has had a shaky spot in the lineup. He was replaced by Ariel Hukporti on a game-by-game basis, according to coach Tom Thibodeau.
This season, Sims started three games when Karl-Anthony Towns was sidelined with injuries. While he’s shown some potential, it’s unclear what the Knicks could get in return for him. Rumors suggest they might be asking for a second-round pick.
At 26, Sims has caught some attention around the league, but being out of the rotation makes him a tough sell. Plus, he’s set to become a free agent this summer.
The Knicks might also be looking to add another center, as Mitchell Robinson is expected to return to practice soon after recovering from ankle surgery. Sims’ future could depend on Robinson’s return before the trade deadline.
Robinson hasn’t started sprinting yet, but he’s doing light shooting. Sims has a $2.1 million expiring contract, which complicates things since the Knicks can’t take back more salary than they send out.
Sims was the 58th pick in the 2021 draft and was the only frontcourt reserve for the first 20 games this season. His offensive game has struggled, but he’s received praise for his defense.
He logged 29 minutes and grabbed 10 rebounds in a recent game but only played four minutes in the next. His absence from the lineup wasn’t due to a trade, but Thibodeau opted for Hukporti instead.
Thibodeau mentioned they’re just exploring different options. Sims has great athleticism and was even a Slam Dunk contestant, but he hasn’t been able to expand his game much.
This season, he’s averaging a career-low in points and minutes. The Knicks are looking into ways to strengthen their frontcourt while also shopping Sims around.
