Greenlawn: A piece of history is up for sale. Laura and Robert Dunne are selling their charming 18th-century home, built by a soldier who fought for George Washington.

After nearly 40 years of loving restoration, they’ve listed it for $1.24 million. Laura, a retired Chase Bank executive, called it “the ultimate antique.”

This three-bedroom, 3,000-square-foot house has been a labor of love. The Dunnes bought it in 1989 for $236,000 and added a three-story extension using salvaged materials.

They turned it into a living museum, filling it with period furniture and keeping its colonial vibe alive. Original wood floors and hand-hewn beams still shine inside.

They even added a walk-in fireplace and a bake oven, using bricks from old homes in New England. Laura’s childhood love for early American life inspired their restoration journey.

She often cooked on the hearth, living out her dream. The house, originally built by Morris Bartow, wasn’t always where it is now. It was moved in the 1940s after sitting empty for years.

Locals know the home not just for its age but for the stories it holds. The Dunnes filled it with antiques, but those won’t be part of the sale.

As they prepare to retire in New England, where they’ve bought another historic home, they reflect on the memories made here. Laura recalls a time when a road rally turned her home into a landmark.

Visitors have included Bartow’s descendants and even a woman born in the house in 1911. She brought pictures from her childhood when she visited in 2009.

One descendant from Florida was so touched by his visit that he told Laura, “You made my life by inviting me here. This is my history.”

Though they’re sad to leave, the Dunnes are excited for their next adventure. This historic Greenlawn property is now one of the most expensive listings in the area, with a median home price of $777,000.

William Tarantola from Howard Hanna Coach Realtors is handling the listing.
