New York City: A recent survey shows that a whopping 75% of New Yorkers support a law to ban masks during protests. This move aims to help identify individuals involved in hate crimes.

The poll, conducted by Mercury Public Affairs for the #UnMaskHateNY coalition, found that support for the mask ban spans all demographics. Interestingly, 68% of respondents believe that while free speech is important, it shouldn’t protect those who engage in hateful behavior.

During a recent protest, tensions flared between pro-Palestine and pro-Israel groups, highlighting the need for safety measures. Only 23% of those surveyed think people should wear whatever they want, regardless of their actions.

Many voters, about 60%, feel that hate and harassment based on race or religion have worsened. Alarmingly, 74% of Jewish voters reported an increase in discrimination, with similar concerns echoed by elderly voters.

Safety is a big worry, especially among women and older individuals. Half of the voters expressed fears of becoming victims of targeted harassment or hate crimes, with minorities feeling particularly vulnerable.

Reports indicate that antisemitism has surged since the Hamas attacks on Israel in October 2023, leading to more anti-Israel protests. The #UnMaskHateNY coalition is urging lawmakers to reinstate a mask ban, similar to one that helped expose the KKK in the past.

New York had previously lifted its mask ban during the COVID-19 pandemic, but now there’s a push for a new law that would allow medical and religious exemptions.

In Nassau County, a local mask ban has already been approved and is holding up in court. Advocates like Marc Morial, president of the National Urban League, emphasize the link between anonymity and abuse, urging for accountability.

Eric Goldstein from the UJA Federation of New York supports regulating mask-wearing as a vital step toward safety. The proposed penalties for violating the mask ban could range from minor violations to serious misdemeanors.

The survey, conducted from December 16-20, 2024, included 800 active voters and has a margin of error of 3.46 percentage points.
