New Orleans: A man named Jeremi Sensky was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was celebrating New Year’s Day when a truck attack happened on Bourbon Street. Jeremi, who uses a wheelchair due to a past accident, was hit by a vehicle driven by a man inspired by ISIS.

He was there with family, just trying to enjoy the festivities. Suddenly, chaos erupted as people ran for safety. Jeremi couldn’t move fast enough. The truck hit him hard, breaking bones in his legs and throwing him out of his wheelchair.

Lying on the ground, he witnessed the attacker and police exchanging gunfire. It was terrifying, but he felt a bit safer being on the ground. That sense of safety quickly faded when he learned about the homemade bombs the attacker had left behind.

Jeremi was anxious, urging first responders to get him out of there. But as he processed the situation, he realized how many others were hurt or killed. After a long surgery and a tough recovery, he was finally discharged from the hospital. His daughter shared photos of him celebrating his release, showing him smiling and raising his fist in triumph.

Despite the support from a GoFundMe campaign, Jeremi hopes the city will take responsibility for the attack. He feels frustrated that there weren’t proper barriers in place to prevent such incidents. His wife, Crystal, expressed her concerns on social media, questioning if his wheelchair helped stop the attacker.

Jeremi is trying to cope with everything that happened. He summed it up simply: “I’m alive, and being alive … is being lucky, I guess.” Sometimes, just being alive is enough.
