Orlando: Martin Luther King Jr. Day is coming up on Monday, January 20. It’s a great time to reflect on the impact of this incredible Civil Rights leader and to give back to the community.

It’s hard to believe it’s been over 60 years since Dr. King shared his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech. His message is still so important today.

In Central Florida, there are tons of events planned. From concerts to discussions, community leaders and volunteers are coming together to celebrate. Here’s a quick rundown of what’s happening.

First up, the MLK Commemorative Luncheon is back for its 39th year. Hosted by the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, it features keynote speaker Marc Morial, former Mayor of New Orleans. This event will honor students and community leaders with awards and scholarships. It’s happening at First Baptist Orlando on January 17 at 11 a.m.

In Groveland, there’s an MLK Celebration with a free breakfast at the E. L. Puryear Building on January 18 from 9 to 10:30 a.m.

Orlando’s 41st Annual MLK Parade is set for January 18 at 10 a.m. The theme this year is “Mission Possible: Protecting Freedom, Justice, and Democracy in the Spirit of Nonviolence 365.” Expect a lively atmosphere with drumlines, dancing, and lots of community spirit.

Eatonville will also have a parade and celebration on January 18 at 2 p.m. with the theme “Illuminating Tomorrow Together.”

The Unity Heritage Festival in Winter Park is a two-day event filled with live music, games, and food on January 19 and 20.

On January 19, the Orlando Magic will host MLK Night at their game against the Denver Nuggets, recognizing the MLK Youth Humanitarian Award winners.

Sanford has a whole weekend of events planned, including a commemorative banquet and an interfaith service. The annual MLK Parade will take place on January 20 at 10 a.m.

If you’re into running, the Chasing the Dream 5K in Orlando starts at 7:30 a.m. on January 20, with proceeds going to the New Image Youth Center.

There’s also the Arthur “Pappy” Kennedy Prayer Breakfast on January 20 at 7:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church Orlando, honoring both Dr. King and Orlando’s first Black city council member.

The City of Orlando will host a Great Day of Service, where volunteers will pack and distribute meals to those in need on January 20 starting at 9 a.m.

Other events include the Seedlings for Civil Rights initiative, the Oviedo Citizens in Action Parade, and celebrations in Ocoee and Winter Garden.

Finally, the Martin Luther King Jr. Parade in Apopka will kick off at 2 p.m. on January 20, with the theme “Committed to Unity.”

So, there’s a lot going on to honor Dr. King’s legacy this year. It’s a perfect chance to get involved and celebrate together.
