Victorville will host a march and plaque unveiling honoring civil rights on January 20

The march kicks off at 9:30 a.m. on January 20, starting at the corner of Seneca Road and Civic Drive. It will wrap up at the Civil Rights Memorial, where local leaders will share inspiring words.
During the ceremony, sixth-grader Aimee Calderon will be recognized for winning the annual Civil Rights Memorial Essay Contest. She’ll read her essay, which honors Claudette Colvin, the subject of a new bronze plaque.
Colvin made history nine months before Rosa Parks when she refused to give up her bus seat in Montgomery, Alabama. At just 15, she stood her ground, leading to her arrest. Her bravery is now celebrated as part of the civil rights movement.
Aimee’s essay will be featured on the plaque at the memorial, which has been celebrating civil rights contributions for ten years. Students from Victorville are invited to participate in this meaningful contest.
The memorial honors many civil rights leaders, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Harriet Tubman. This year’s plaque, dedicated to Claudette Colvin, is sponsored by Heritage Victor Valley Medical Group.
