That trade led to the growth of cities like Buffalo and Rochester, and even New York City thrived. Big companies like American Express and Kodak emerged during this boom.

But now, New York isn’t leading anymore. The population is dropping, with nearly 340,000 people leaving in the last five years. Safety and quality of life issues are pushing folks and businesses to other states.

To get back on top, New York needs to show it can still do big things. What’s the next major project? What’s the next big idea like Bloomberg’s applied sciences competition?

In her upcoming state address, Gov. Hochul should focus on key areas to push the Empire State forward.

The state budget has skyrocketed from $173 billion to $237 billion in just six years. New York now has the highest taxes in the nation and spends more per person than all but Alaska. Raising taxes can’t be the go-to solution. We need efficient government to keep businesses and residents here.

New Yorkers need to feel safe, not just be safe. The bail and discovery reforms from 2019 were well-meaning but have gone too far, leaving victims and the public unprotected.

We need to rebalance justice. First, judges should be able to consider public safety when setting bail. New York is the only state that doesn’t allow this. We can’t let repeat offenders roam free.

Second, the discovery reforms meant to speed up trials have backfired. Fewer plea deals are happening, and more cases are getting dismissed because of the complicated new rules.

The burden is too heavy on the wrong side.

We’re also seeing more people with mental health issues. Both the governor and attorney general know this is a problem, especially when mentally ill individuals commit violent acts.

The governor is right to make it easier to commit and treat dangerous individuals. She needs a solid plan to change the standards for involuntary commitment so more people get the help they need.

These reforms will improve quality of life, which will help the business climate and social environment in the state.

Congestion pricing has put New York in the spotlight. The governor needs to ensure full transparency and commit to analyzing traffic data before imposing new fees. The MTA must also be accountable for its projects and efficiency.

With the nation watching, the governor can show that the congestion toll is a smart investment, not just a cash grab.

New York is doing a lot of things right. It has a well-educated workforce, top-notch education, and world-class cultural institutions.

But in today’s competitive world, New York can’t just sit back. The Empire State needs to live up to its motto, Ever Upward.
