Olathe East coach Jerome McCray is facing cancer head-on, inspiring his athletes with his strength and resilience during this tough time

Diagnosed with stage two multiple myeloma just after Christmas, McCray sees this as a chance to show his kids the importance of resilience. He’s been coaching for years, and it’s something he truly loves.
His dedication is clear; he’s not just the varsity wide receivers coach but also the freshmen girls basketball coach and an assistant for track and field. Mentoring young athletes is in his blood.
When he shared his diagnosis with his four boys, they embraced him, knowing how much he cares for them. The community has rallied around him, raising over $11,000 in just two days through a GoFundMe campaign.
His impact at Olathe East is immeasurable, and his colleagues remind him he’s not alone in this fight. McCray had his first chemotherapy session recently and plans to keep fighting with all his strength.
