Phoenix: A new report from a hiring platform has found that one in five job listings is either fake or never filled. This has made the job market even tougher for job seekers.

Jon Stross, the CEO of Greenhouse, described the situation as a “horror show.” He mentioned that the job market feels more soul-crushing than ever.

One job seeker, Serena Dao, shared her experience of applying to over 260 jobs but only landing five interviews without any offers. This made her wonder how many listings were genuine.

Fortunately, she found a job through networking instead of online applications. She noted that employers often expect candidates to be at 120%, not just 100%.

Glen Loveland, a senior career coach, emphasized the importance of networking in today’s job market. He said that building authentic relationships is key to long-term success.

For those still using job boards like LinkedIn or Indeed, the risk of applying for ghost jobs remains. Experts suggest reaching out to recruiters to verify if a job posting is real.

Despite these challenges, the job market is growing faster than expected. The Labor Department recently reported that 256,000 jobs were added in December, surpassing economists’ predictions.
