A section of a pedestrian bridge collapsed onto the Seward Highway, causing lane closures and prompting inspections amid high winds in Anchorage.

Anchorage: Early Sunday morning, part of a pedestrian bridge near Rabbit Creek Elementary School fell onto the Seward Highway. This caused both lanes to close for a bit.
Luckily, the bridge’s frame and supports stayed intact, but some roofing and fencing came down. The cause is still a mystery, but there were some really strong winds at the time.
The Alaska Department of Transportation said the incident happened around 2:30 a.m. Crews worked quickly to clear the debris, and the highway reopened later that morning.
Engineers are set to check the remaining structure of the bridge soon, as they want to ensure everything is safe. Thankfully, there were no serious injuries reported.
One vehicle did hit some debris, but it was a minor incident. The police and transportation departments didn’t have more details right away.
