Philadelphia: After years of protests against a new arena for the 76ers, Chinatown residents are feeling a mix of relief and skepticism. The previous plan raised fears of gentrification and displacement of local businesses.

Activists are glad the old proposal is off the table, but they’re still wary. Many feel the process wasn’t inclusive and worry that their voices won’t be heard in future plans.

Wei Chen, an organizer, expressed relief but also surprise at the sudden change. She mentioned how the whole situation has made the community anxious.

The 76ers haven’t commented yet, but in the past, their project leader claimed they were engaging with locals. However, many residents remain unconvinced.

Xu Lin, who runs a restaurant nearby, was initially shocked by the news but then felt joy. He feared the construction would hurt his business, which is just a short walk from the proposed site.

While he’s relieved, Lin still doubts that developers will consider the community in future projects. He feels there’s a lack of trust in how they engage with locals.

Many activists believe the emotional toll could have been avoided if developers had listened to the community from the start. They’re proud of their efforts but frustrated by the process.

In a recent press conference, Mohan Seshadri highlighted the importance of Chinatown’s history and the need for better planning. He stressed that the community’s concerns should have been addressed earlier.

Fariha Khan from the University of Pennsylvania praised the community’s relentless efforts to make their voices heard. She noted that Chinatown has faced many challenges from past developments.

Khan believes there’s potential for a collaborative approach to future projects, emphasizing the need for inclusive conversations about the neighborhood’s future.
