Farmington: The state has joined forces with San Juan College in northwestern New Mexico to kick off a fresh workforce training program focused on environmental cleanup.

This new initiative, called the Careers Remediating Environmental Waste (CREW) program, zeroes in on uranium reclamation and mediation. Classes will start at San Juan College in February, so it’s just around the corner!

Lorenzo Reyes, the dean of workforce and development at San Juan College, expressed excitement about this partnership. He mentioned that the college has a solid track record of innovation and preparing students with the skills that are in high demand.

Northwestern New Mexico used to be a hotspot for uranium mining and is now a key area for natural gas exploration.

Participants in the CREW program might be eligible for some nice perks, like $2,000 monthly stipends, child care help, and assistance with housing and travel costs.

The New Mexico Environment Department and the Department of Workforce Solutions also played a role in launching this program. DWS Secretary Sarita Nair highlighted that climate resilience and natural resource management are crucial areas for workforce development in the state’s plan.

Nair believes that CREW is a significant step toward investing in the talent needed to care for the beautiful state we all love.
