New York: Today’s the day for Governor Hochul’s State of the State address. It’s a big deal, and everyone’s curious about what she’ll say. Education funding is a hot topic, especially with the Foundation Aid formula needing an update. It’s been around since 2007, and folks agree it’s outdated.

Last year, the state budget set aside $2 million for a study to improve this funding formula. A report came out in December with a bunch of recommendations that could change how schools get their money. I’m eager to see which ideas Hochul will push for today.

Another thing on the agenda is a state-funded universal school meal program. Right now, low-income districts get free meals, but with potential cuts to federal funding, a state program could help keep those meals coming.

On the climate front, I’m looking for details on a “cap and invest” plan. Will Hochul finally lay out a solid strategy? Plus, will she address the transition away from gas? Last year’s proposal didn’t get much traction, so it’ll be interesting to see if she tries again.

And what about renewable energy? There’s been talk about making it easier to build wind and solar projects. Hochul might announce some changes today that could speed things up.

Ethics laws are also on my radar. With the court hearing about former Governor Cuomo’s lawsuit against the ethics agency, it’ll be telling to see if Hochul suggests any changes to the law governing that agency.

Lastly, affordability is the buzzword this year. Hochul is expected to share plans to tackle the high cost of living, including child care and housing. She’s got a lot on her plate, and I can’t wait to hear what she proposes.
