Kyiv: The UK is sending a new air defense system called Gravehawk to Ukraine. This mobile system can fire air-to-air missiles from the ground, which is a big deal for Ukraine’s defense strategy.

Since the full-scale invasion by Russia in 2022, Ukraine has struggled to keep up with air defense needs. The Gravehawk is designed to help with that, especially since it uses missiles that Ukraine already has.

The UK Ministry of Defence mentioned that this system is part of a larger $5.5 billion military aid package. Experts believe it will allow Ukraine to use more affordable ammunition, which is crucial given the high costs of other systems like the Patriot missile.

Gravehawk is about the size of a shipping container and has already been tested in Ukraine. The UK plans to send 15 more units this year. This new system is expected to bolster Ukraine’s defenses against various aerial threats, including drones.

The need for such systems was highlighted recently when a Russian drone got close to the presidential palace in Kyiv during a visit from UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. It’s a constant reminder of the challenges Ukraine faces daily.
