USW President David McCall speaks out against U.S. Steel’s recent lawsuits following the blocked Nippon Steel acquisition

He’s really against Nippon Steel buying U.S. Steel, especially after President Biden blocked the deal back in January. That deal was worth nearly $15 billion and would have meant big bucks for the Gary Works facility.
Biden’s decision was all about national security, and McCall believes both Biden and Trump get how important a strong domestic steel industry is. He also pointed out that U.S. Steel has been shutting down operations in places like Gary and Granite City, which isn’t a good look.
McCall mentioned that while U.S. Steel was busy lobbying, they were also investing in a non-union facility in Arkansas instead of improving their current plants. He thinks that’s a huge mistake.
The lawsuits are a big deal. They’re claiming that Biden’s blocking of the deal was unfair and that the process was manipulated. They want the court to step in and change things.
Some local mayors have been critical of the union’s stance, but Nippon Steel is still saying they want to invest big in Gary. They had plans to put a billion dollars into the facility, which could have been a game-changer.
But after Biden’s decision, the future looks a bit shaky for Gary. McCall, however, is confident that U.S. Steel will bounce back. He believes the workers will keep making top-notch steel for years to come.
