Each month, veterans gather in Reading for support, food, and friendship, creating a strong community.

But the folks who gathered in the parking lot weren’t about to let that stop them. They showed up, ready to help others, just like they do every month. This event, called Stand Down, is organized by the Veterans Coalition of Pennsylvania and takes place on the second Saturday of each month.
Topher Bower, the executive director, shared how important this event is for veterans. “Many people are struggling, and we want to help our brothers and sisters,” he said. The event offers food, clothing, blankets, and a meal provided by different organizations each month.
Bower and his wife started this nonprofit a decade ago to support those who served. They began with a small group of volunteers and have since expanded, even holding events in nearby Pottstown. “We give out about 1,000 pounds of food each month, and the veterans really appreciate it,” he added.
Dave Eberly, a local veteran, looks forward to these gatherings. He values the warm meals and groceries but treasures the camaraderie even more. “We talk about our experiences and support each other,” he said.
Linda Guzman, who travels from Pine Grove, also finds the friendships and resources invaluable. Living on a fixed income can be tough, and she’s grateful for the help.
Sean Perry, who helps run the events, feels a strong connection to the veterans he serves. “We share something deeper than blood,” he said, emphasizing the importance of supporting those who have given so much. It’s clear that these monthly meet-ups are about more than just food; they’re about building a community.
