Virginia’s attorney general has filed a motion to not prosecute Scott Ziegler, ending a lengthy legal battle.
Ziegler was convicted last September for firing a teacher, Erin Brooks, in retaliation. But now, it looks like that’s all coming to an end. The AG’s motion means no new trial will happen, which is a big deal for everyone involved.
Back in January 2022, the attorney general’s office pushed for a special grand jury to look into Ziegler’s actions. Fast forward to September 2022, and he was indicted. After a lot of back and forth, a jury found him guilty in September 2023.
But then, things took a turn. His defense team argued that there was a mistake in how the jury was instructed, and the court agreed to a new trial. However, now the AG is saying that trial won’t take place.
Erin Brooks expressed her gratitude for the support she received during this tough time. She’s ready to move on after settling a civil suit against Ziegler and the school board.
Ziegler, on the other hand, shared his relief and thanked his family and legal team for their support. He believes he acted in the best interest of the students and feels the whole situation was politically motivated.
He’s calling for a closer look at how this all unfolded, hoping it doesn’t happen again. It’s a lot to unpack, but it seems like this chapter is finally closing for everyone involved.
