Wichita: The City Council is thinking about letting golf carts cruise on some streets. They’ll talk about it in their meeting on Tuesday morning.

If they give the green light, golf carts can only roll on streets with a speed limit of 30 mph or less. Each cart will need a “Slow-Moving Vehicle” sign and a special registration sticker from the city. Owners will also need to show they have liability insurance and pay a yearly fee of $75.

Safety is key, so these carts must have certain gear like stop lamps, tail lamps, reflectors, a rearview mirror, and seat belts to meet Kansas standards.

However, golf carts won’t be allowed on busy highways or streets with higher speed limits. They also can’t go through the city’s core area, which is bordered by Kellogg, Hydraulic, Murdock Avenue, and a few other streets.

Carts can’t ride on sidewalks or trails unless they’re marked for golf carts, and they can’t use bike paths or lanes either.

Drivers need to be at least 18 years old and have a valid driver’s license. Plus, they must follow all traffic rules.

Golf carts can’t be on the streets from half an hour before sunset to half an hour after sunrise.

This new rule won’t affect golf carts used for community events, by government agencies, or those on private property and golf courses.

Stay tuned for updates after the city council meeting on Tuesday!
