East Lansing: This week, the Greater Lansing area is buzzing with events to honor Martin Luther King Jr. ahead of the national holiday on Monday.

One highlight is a free Community Unity Dinner on Thursday, January 16, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Kellogg Hotel & Conference Center. Just remember, you need to register to attend.

Organizers emphasize that community was vital to Dr. King. He believed in the connection between all people. He often said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

Next week, MSU will host an MLK Commemorative March starting at 9 a.m. on Monday. It kicks off from Beaumont Tower and heads to the new Multicultural Center. This center is designed to be a safe space for minority students.

Another major event is the 40th Annual Day of Celebration at the Lansing Center on Monday at 11 a.m. Civil rights activist Bernard Lafayette will be the keynote speaker. Tickets are $60 and can be bought online.
