A recent report reveals that many job ads are ‘ghost jobs,’ leaving candidates frustrated and disillusioned with the hiring process

You know how it goes—you’re all excited after an interview, feeling like you nailed it, and then… silence. Greenhouse surveyed 2,500 workers in the US, UK, and Germany, and a whopping three in five suspected they’d run into a ghost job.
Jon Stross, the president of Greenhouse, said the data shows just how tough the job market has become. Ghost jobs aren’t a new thing, either. Back in 2022, a survey found that half of hiring managers kept job postings up even when they weren’t actively looking to hire.
Some companies do this to look like they’re growing or to keep their current employees happy. But it just makes things harder for candidates. To help with this issue, Greenhouse and LinkedIn are rolling out verification features to help job seekers spot these ghost ads.
If you want to avoid ghost jobs, look out for ads that have been posted for over 30 days, aren’t on the company’s website anymore, or have vague job descriptions. It’s a tricky world out there, but being informed can help you navigate it better.
